Maxwell Marion Morton (above), a sixteen year old boy in Pennsylvania, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder, homicide, and firearms possession for killing a classmate and sharing a selfie with his friend on Snapchat.
Maxwell Morton shot and killed the 16 year old Ryan Mangan (Above) with a 9 mm shotgun. Morton, from Jeanette, Pennsylvania, proceeded in killing Mangan brutally. Morton then took a selfie with the limp body, drenched in blood, and sent it to his friend through Snapchat, a very popular social networking app, in which you send images and videos with captions to your friends. Pictures shared through the app are automatically destroyed after a few seconds after they have been viewed. However, the terrifying messages and images that Morton’s friend saw mortified him. Morton’s Snapchat friend has not been named as of yet.
Images with messages that read, “Ryan was not the last one,” and “Told you I cleaned up the shells,” were saved by the smart boy on Snapchat with a screenshot before the image could be deleted. He then showed the images to his mom who then informed the police department.
An affidavit states that Police “received a copy of the photo which depicted the victim sitting in the chair with a gunshot wound to the face. It also depicts a black male taking the ‘selfie,’ with his face facing the camera and the victim behind the actor. The photo had the name ‘Maxwell’ across the top.”
John Peck , who has had over 30 years of experience with Policework, stated,“I’ve never seen it before, but it was a key piece of evidence that led investigators to the defendant.”
Morton, the Snapchat murderer, has been arrested and was being held in a Juvenile Detention Center. He has denied bail, and is currently being held in the county jail. He is awaiting trial where he will be tried as an adult for first-degree murder, homicide, and firearms possession. His preliminary hearing is set for February 19, 2015.
