Top Ten Star Wars Quotes

As Star Wars is one of the most successful movie series of all time, it makes sense that it would gain its own niche in history and pop culture. Memorable scenes and characters also make it easily referenced, even by non-star wars fans. However, one of the best things to reference in Star Wars are its memorable lines. From “Use the force Luke” to “Do or do not”, there are many quotes to choose from. However, for this list, I am choosing the most inspirational, most dramatic, most humorous, or most famous quotes from the Star Wars saga. Also note that while some characters, such as Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Darth Vader, have many famous quotes attributed to them, can’t all be on the list, as I like to spread it out between characters.

10. “These are not the droids you’re looking for”

Kicking off my list is the quote that revealed to audiences one of the many abilities of the force: A Jedi mind trick. As stormtroopers approach Luke’s landspeeder outside the Mos Eisley Spaceport, they ask to see his identity. Obi Wan performs a Jedi mind trick and says “You do not need to see his identification. These are not the droids you’re looking for. You can go about your business. Move along.” The more humorous aspect of this scene is the Stormtrooper repeating Obi-Wan after each of his sentences.

9. “I don’t like sand…”

I know what a lot of you might be thinking: “What? This line stinks! This line is famous for stinking!” And that’s exactly why I included it. This line is so awkward, so stupid, so unintentionally hilarious that I had to include it. I especially love it for its popularity among star wars fan as an inside joke. This bad line appears during the long romance scene between Anakin and Padme, and this line captures its full grand awkwardness. While standing around doing nothing, Padme tells Anakin about how she and her friends used to swim out to an island in the lake and lay on the sand. To this Anakin replies:”I don’t like sand. It’s coarse, and rough, and irritating, and it gets everywhere. Not like you. You’re everything soft and smooth.” They kiss soon afterwards, so apparently comparing your girlfriend to sand is the way to go in a galaxy far far away.

8. “It’s a Trap!”

Like number 9, this quote is on the list not because of its dramatic impact or inspiration, but once again unintentional humour. This line is spoken during the battle of Endor by Admiral Akbar, after the discovery that the defector shield of the second death star is still functioning. The poor Admiral was actually given a pretty good back story in the expanded universe, but all anybody remembers him for is this line. I don’t exactly know why this quote has become so popular, but if I had to guess, I would say it is due to the way he says it so dramatically in his funny voice.

7. “Why do I get the feeling you’re going to be the death of me?”

Despite the fact that this quote is  not very well-known, I still put it on the list because of its subtle humor and irony. Spoken by Obi-Wan to Anakin right after a dangerous high-speed chase through the city in a flying vehicle. My favorite thing about this quote is its nod to the original trilogy, as anyone who has seen A New Hope knows that Anakin Skywalker(As Darth Vader) does kill obi Wan. Perhaps even more ironic is Anakin’s response:”Don’t say that master. You’re the closest thing I have to a father.”

6. “I find your lack of faith disturbing”

Like “These are not the droids you’re looking for”, this quote was used to introduce yet another ability of the force. However, the force choke is far more sinister than a Jedi mind trick. After Admiral Motti questions Darth Vader and even the force itself, Vader decides to give him a hands-on demonstration. Vader likely would have killed Motti if Grand Moff Tarkin had not stepped in. Sinister and powerful, this line is as infamous and powerful as the force choke itself.

5. “At last we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi, at last we will have revenge”

Darth Maul was an awesome villain, with a double-bladed saberstaff and an intimidating design and face. However, when it came to communicating with others, he wasn’t very talkative, having only two lines in all of his screen time. However, one of them was a pretty cool line. This mysterious and foreboding line tells of the terrible things to come for the Jedi and the rest of the galaxy.

4. “Do or do not, there is no try”

While there are dozens of awesome and wise Yoda quotes to choose from, this is my favorite out of them all. Spoken to Luke during his training on Dagobah, this line also has some great applications in our world. It’s always a great idea to give it your all, and if you tell yourself that you’re going to do something, you’re much more likely to get it done than if you simply try. Runner ups for this Yoda spot include: “Once you start down the dark path, forever will it control your destiny. Consume you it will!” and “When 900 years old you are, look this good you will not.

3. I have a bad feeling about this

At number three is the vintage Star wars line “I have a bad feeling about this” This line is spoken in every single star wars movies in many 200_sdifferent situations, but none of them very good. It was first spoken in the original Star wars twice, once by Luke as the Milinium Falcon approaches the death star, tumblr_lu6e4ge9qC1qc5s9to3_250and by Han as the trash compactor starts up. Since then, it has been repeated in each subsequent movie at least once. It has been spoken by Obi Wan on the 200_s (1)Viceroy’s ship in the Phantom Menace, by Anakin in the Geonosian arena, by Obi Wan in the battle of Corusant, by Princess Leia in the belly of the space slug, and by C3PO and Han Solo in Jabba’s palace and the Ewok forest, respectively.

2. May the force be with you

Like “I have a bad feeling about this”, this quote (or a slight variation) can be found in every Star Wars movie in the Saga. A common saying among Jedi, this is often used as a way of saying “Good luck”, telling your friend that you hope 200_s (2)the force is onimages (2) their side in their endeavor, so that they have a greater chance of succeeding. It also is used outside of the Jedi order, even among non-force users, like Admiral Ackbar and General Dodona. It’s constant recurrence throughout the saga has given it an important place in pop culture, and can almost always be attributed to Star Wars.

1. I am your father

Taking my number one spot is arguably the most famous Star Wars quote of all time, and the one with the biggest pop cultural impact, luke-i-am-your-owner_o_869205with hundreds of memes and parodies to boot. When Star Wars was new in the world, a mystery that perplexed many fans was that of  Luke’s father. Luke was often curious about it, and Obi-Wan was extremley vague in his explanion. What  happened to him? How did he die?  Did he know he had a son? However, all of their questions were finally answered in the final moments of The Empire Strikes Back. After besting Luke in a duel by severing his hand, Vader tells Luke the news that turned the character relationships, the plot, and the entire fan base upside-down. Now of course in this day and age everyone knows that Darth Vader is Luke’s father, even those who have never seen the movies, due to the popularity of this quote in pop culture. A unfortunate fact about this line is that it is constantly misquoted, many people saying “Luke, I am your father”,images (3)  when in reality the line is “No, I am your father”, in response to Luke’s accusation that he killed him. However, it’s status as the most famous Star Wars line and its huge impact on the story, makes this my favorite Star Wars quote of all time.

Now there are dozens of other great Star Wars quotes, and I’m sure I’ve forgotten some great ones, so please remind me to leave your favorite line from a Galaxy far, far, away in the comments. Please don’t forget to leave a suggestion for next week either, because I’m all out of ideas.
